Copywriting is basically the term used in referring to the process of writing the text that publicize a business, person, an idea or an opinion. A copy may be used on its own, such as a script for a television or radio advertisement, or in conjunction with other kinds of media as in the text for websites and promotional materials. The main purpose of copywriting is to create text that would persuade an audience to act by patronizing a particular product, service or viewpoint. Copywriting may also be used to sway an audience from a certain notion, or belief.

What Are Examples of Copywriting?

People encounter products of copywriting everyday through slogans, mail advertisements, jingle lyrics, website content, commercial scripts headlines, taglines, press releases or other text that are used in marketing and advertising. Copywriting can be manifested in billboards, print ads, catalogs, brochures, websites, letters, email, post cards, commercials and other forms of advertising media.

Where is Copywriting Done?

Copywriting is usually done in retail stores, advertising companies and marketing firms in a metropolitan area. The copywriting work environment is one characterized with hectic schedules that requires its workers to perform their tasks creatively under pressure. Marketing and advertising is notorious for its fast-paced nature where crises are already considered a normal occurrence. Copywriting is typified by successive assignment with immediate deadlines everyday and constant calls for eleventh-hour revisions. Copywriting is therefore a field for the dynamic, creative and bold.

How Rewarding is Copywriting?

Copywriters usually start off as assistants who earn as much as $30,000 to $35,000 a year, gradually increasing to around $40,000 once they become really adept into copywriting. Eventually they can be promoted to senior positions, earning about $100,000 and then to copywriting chief, earning around $125,000. Copywriters may also ultimately become creative director, earning as much as $200,000 a year.

Copywriting usually requires a minimum of 40 hours of work a week with expected overtime during peak seasons and important occasions. Overtime if of course compensated correspondingly.

The Quandary of Science
The Bret Dudl Quandary By Tony Brussat.

The experience of liminality is the realm of the artist. However, all of us can play, and all of us can experience the liminal - subjunctive, would-be, could-be states of mind. The artist is just the one who has made a vocation of doing so. The artist is the one who has practiced it as a craft, and it is our habit to defer to his or her expertise. But we should be wary of leaving the realms of creative expression to professionals, just as we must be leary of abandoning politics to politicians.

When asked by the anthropologist Victor Turner to reveal the meanings of their symbols and rituals, different members of the Ndembu tribe gave different answers. None of them knew the “right” answer because there was no right answer, just as there is no right answer to “the meaning of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.”

So, is there a meaning to a primitive ritual, such as a rain dance or a coming of age ceremony? We know that if the ritual helps, it is good and it gets repeated - and another seemingly irrational tradition is born! But is it an attempt to control a crisis, or to cope with it, to survive it.

In general, people don’t use symbols to try to explain the mysteries of nature but to express their feelings about them. If the anthropologists of the19th century had understood this, ritual might today be better understood.

But the early anthropologists were intoxicated with science’s successes at harnessing and controlling the forces of nature. No wonder the primitive tribes they observed appeared to be irrational: the anthropologists mis-perceived their rituals as childish, irrational attempts to control nature.

Science is a precise and careful response to the difficulties and wonders that life and existence present to us. But its ability to control nature is just a fortunate and imperfect by-product of its main purpose. Science is a ritual, too, and like magic and religion, it is first and foremost an expressive outlet for human angst. Like all rituals, science is just the way a particular group expresses itself amid the circumstances and crises of the world.

I don’t know if most scientists think of their craft as expressive, but perhaps it might be valuable if they did. An Einstein or a Curie or a Newton comes at their work from a different perspective than most of his or her colleagues - such minds as theirs have an understanding that does not quite square with the science of the day.

The motivation behind genius is created by imperfections in the order of things. They have an intimation, a sense, an intuition of something beyond the known traditions of their discipline. Such curious souls are compelled to devote their lives to the expression of something ineffable. That some geniuses happen to choose science as their vocation is just our good fortune.

It is for the same reason that an artist lives for his art - art is a vision that neither the artist nor anybody else can explain, but which none-the-less demands expression lest life seem unlived. And the patriot, too, who risks all for liberty and natural right, is another who expresses a yearning for the ideal.

Science, as it is often practiced today, does try to control nature. But for all its successes, our clean world is proving all too toxic, and our human violence is undiminished. This is what comes of our mistaking the primary purpose of a ritual.

Health Hazards Of Obesity

Bret Dudl Obesity By: Kevin Pederson.

Obesity, a worldwide phenomenon, today has surged to become one of the most deadly enemies of mankind, afflicting mostly the rich and the affluent. Obese in simple terms means excess body weight, usually in the absence of an underlying disease, except in a small number of cases where the condition originates from hormonal disturbances.

The terms overweight and obese are used synonymously by the commoner; however, there is some difference at the clinical level. A person can be considered overweight if his body weight is 10-19 per cent more than the normal or ideal body weight. However, when the body weight of a person is 20 per cent or more than his ideal body weight, he is considered obese. As we have seen previously, the ideal body weight for a person depends on his height, sex, age and body frame.

Thus, obesity is a condition of excess body weight and is usually the result of excess accumulation of fat in the body. When energy intake is persistently greater than energy expenditure, the result is gradual accumulation of fat deposits in the adipose tissue depots. Obesity does not happen in a day or a week. It is a gradual process taking place at snails pace when the individual constantly maintains a positive energy balance. A positive energy balance is usually the result of excessive energy intake.

High calorie and high fat foods pamper our taste buds to an extent that most individuals find it difficult to refrain from them in spite of being aware of their nutrient composition. The ignorant certainly cannot be blamed.

The other major culprit is modern urban life mechanisation and dependence on different tools has made life easy and increasingly sedentary. This has lead to the lowering of activity levels, of daily energy expenditure and thus of our total daily caloric needs. Increased calorie intake due to consumption of processed foods and decreased activity levels have together taken a toll, increasing the prevalence of obesity. Sometimes, of course obesity may also be the result of an interplay of hormones.

Obesity jeopardizes an individuals health in more ways than one. It imperils both body and mind of an obese individual. An obese individuals distorted body shape and appearance can be a source both of humiliation and discomfort. Many obese people complain of pain in the joints and may develop arthritis (osteoarthritis) because they have overburdened their knees and joints with their excess body weight. This is the most obvious health hazard that obesity invokes.

Obesity has been associated with a wide range of health problems. It contributes to increasing levels of lipids (fat) and cholesterol in the blood (hyperlipidemia and hypercholesterolemia respectively), leading to narrowing of blood vessels due to deposition of fatty materials in coronary arteries (atherosclerosis). This in turn causes the blood pressure levels to soar (hypertension) and increases the risk of heart attack (myocardial infarction) and strokes.

Obesity increases the risk of diabetes because it
increases insulin resistance leading to glucose intolerance. Weight reduction helps many diabetic patients in controlling their diabetes. Obesity can also lead to pregnancy related and surgical complications.
Obese individuals are also more likely to develop cancer. Certain cancers such as cancers of the gall bladder, endometrium, ovary, breasts and cervix in women, and cancers of the colon and prostate in men have been associated with excess body weight.

Greenhouse Effect and the Thinning of Ozone Layer

Infovest21 Greenhouse Effects by Nazirah Umi.

When sunlight enters the Earth’s atmosphere, some of its solar radiation is reflected back to space while most of the radiation is absorbed by the Earth, which warms the surface of the land and sea. As the Earth is warmed, heat in the form of infrared radiation is radiated back into the space. However, much of the heat does not escape from the atmosphere but remains trapped by the greenhouse gases, causing the atmosphere to be warmed.

At the same time, the greenhouse gases also radiate infrared rays towards the surface of the Earth. In this respect, greenhouse gases in the atmosphere behave a lot like the glass panel panes of a greenhouse. This is why this phenomenon is known as the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is important because without it, the Earth would be too cold for living organisms to survive.

Carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), methane, nitrous oxide, low level ozone and water vapor make up the greenhouse gases. With the exception of CFCs, most of the greenhouse gases occur naturally. However, all of them are also produced as a result of human activities.

Today, data collected around the world show a steady increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in tandem with rapid development and industrialization. Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide have increased by nearly 30%, the concentration of methane have more than doubled and the concentrations of nitrous oxide have risen about 15%.

Scientists believe that the combustion of fossil fuels and the other human activities such as increased deforestation and industrial production are the primary reasons for the increased concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide. As the concentration of greenhouse gases rises, the greenhouse effect becomes more pronounced., trapping more heat in the atmosphere and raising the Earth’s average temperature.

Handy Tips to Changing Your Career

Handy Infovest21 Tips by James Pinter.

Some people find their dream career early on, holding on to it with a tight fist until the time comes to retire. For others, such an idea is only something to think about after a hard day. If you are pondering taking that big step and changing your career, the below tips can get you on your way.

1. Sit down and prepare a list of what you believe your skills are. This list should be quite extensive, and cover anything and everything you can think of. Are you proficient with writing programs on the computer? Do you believe your ability to build items used around the home are better than most? No matter what comes into your head, even if it seems small, it should be noted. Once you have completed it, decide what skills you would want to incorporate into a new career, and what you would prefer to leave as a hobby.

2. Follow the path of others who have chosen to make changes in their life and start your own business. With the rise of the internet and the economy birthing an uncertain job market, this has become an attractive option. But why would a person choose to do this? For one thing, anyone who takes this path will become their own boss. They will carry almost complete control over what the business does, when the business operates, and so on. Keep in mind, however, that there is no guarantee of success. Some people do not even see results for several months or a year.

3. Think about the work environment that you reside in now. If you would enjoy your job if only a few changes were made, consider simply moving to another building or office. By placing yourself in a new, fresh environment, you may find it was all you needed to find happiness in your current career. This step is often ignored or never even considered; put yourself at an advantage and choose to try it. If you make the move and are still not satisfied, it is time to move on to other things.

4. Realize that you are not going to achieve golden status in your new career overnight. It could take months or years for something significant to happen, if it happens at all. Exercise patience; the ladder to success has steps, and each step must be climbed to get to the top.

Infovest21
