Tech Investments Are Going Green

Are you one of those people who likes to know that your investment dollars are going towards a good cause? Do you abhor the idea of your money going to unethical businesses or to multinational and umbrella corporations that will utilize your dollars for programs or products you don’t believe in? Then Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) is probably the right path for you. With all of the stimulus incentives for going green and the global political consensus to move forward with climate change initiatives more and more investment firms are recommending “going green”.

Alternative energy investments are seeing a rising rate of return, some as high as 44% a year. Considering that these are mostly start up firms an investment in their venture will undoubtedly grow jobs, so you have the double boost in knowing that your money will not only provide clean energy, but also put some of your neighbors to work again. More than one research firm has projected that biofuels, wind and solar power, and fuel cell technologies will quadruple their rate of return within the next six years.

There are individual companies looking for an investment in their green “tech”, as well as, mutual funds like the New Alternative Fund (NALFX) that manages investments in companies that “have a positive impact on the environment”. They believe in doing more than just avoiding companies with a negative impact, they choose to invest in those that wish to create an alternative future for the world. Considering that there are many economic doomsayers that will tell you we have already hit peak oil, investing in green is not just socially conscious investing, it may also be prudent investing. The fact that there are so many alternative fuel vehicles being foisted on the market should be a clear indicator of the direction this industry is headed. Hydrogen fuel cells are being tested in California and the District of Columbia. Electric engine vehicles are about to be released to the public. Wind energy is making its presence known on the East Coast of the US. Time are changing.

There is a demand for “green” products and green technologies. It will only increase as the costs of petroleum based products rise.
